To begin with I am mostly interested in movie titles and how they connect to the film. And I wondered how the North Atlantic would be reflected in the movie. North Atlantic Ocean refers to the northern portion of the Atlantic Ocean, extending from the equator north to the Arctic Ocean according to Google. This is to give you a vivid indication of what the title represents and how it is connected to the film. And for your information people work at this geographical location in various capacities, including fishing, shipping, research and energy exploration.
To continue, it will interest you to know that the short film, North Atlantic is written and directed by Bernardo Nascimento and is his debut short film. The protagonist in this film is no other than Hugo, an air traffic controller in the Azores receiving distress signals. I personally didn’t know what that screen with the green rotation represented until I researched, but the character’s acting made me understand something was not right out there. So in this case the antagonist ain’t an individual instead the harsh forces of nature, impending disaster and the chaotic atmosphere on the Atlantic.
The story and theme has an emotional experience, it’s deeply moving and tense with hope that the other guy makes it out of the tragedy on the Atlantic, and as a viewer I had empathy. And the film grabs your attention immediately when there’s the beep on the screen and then Hugo picks up the emergency call.
And this story is basically a lone pilot called James, stranded over the Atlantic, contacts a controller on the remote Azores island, both men connect, confronting mortality as time ticks away. And to me the central message of the film is human compassion amid cruel situations and in these moments connection matters though it’s a hopeless situation, and I was fascinated when Hugo picked his guitar to sing, which wanted to solve the situation but to calm his nerves as he faced the tragic situation head on.
Also the twist and surprise wasn’t a dramatic plot twist rather the emotional impact comes from the unspoken, inevitable climax and the strength of their bond.
Furthermore the characters were believable. These are ordinary men responding to tragedy with bravery and humanity. And the acting is subtly elevated through dialogue and visuals. Both characters shine equally, no one overshadows the other. Hugo’s steady empathy, James’ vulnerability we’re just on point. Their telephonic bond built on with the circumstances which becomes oddly intimate.
The cinematography is also on point, the starting presents an extreme long shot in the dark yet you can see a car moving, which tells how light can hide and reveal at the same time, and a beautiful composed shot of James plane isolated amid the dark storms and the overhead shot of the plane as a dot in the looming cloud is a poetic visual anchor. The lighting and framing evokes the coldness of nature, the colour palette is muted echoing hope.
Also the sound in the film was minimalistic and atmospheric which supported the mood without overshadowing dialogue. And it was clear as well with effects that enhance realism.
My expectations were met and I resonated with the film on an emotional level. The directing was elegant with strong visual storytelling and authentic performances. And yes I’ll recommend this movie for any movie lover.
In conclusion, North Atlantic is awesomely written and brought to life through its visuals. If you appreciate thoughtful quiet storytelling and human centered drama you should see this.
